Fine & Performing Arts

Grading in the Fine and Performing Arts program is based primarily on effort, participation, and completion of assigned projects such as performance and portfolios. It is imperative that students make attendance a priority as classes and performances cannot be made up.

Students experience Drama, Choreography, Art and Music throughout each school year in a rotational manner. The culmination of the fine and performing arts curriculum is the middle school dramatic arts production. All four performing and fine arts teachers collaborate with students in this final project.

Middle School Students attend Drama, Choreography, Art and Music for one rotation each. Students are introduced to and practice public speaking, playwriting, dramatic and dance movement, costuming, musical composition, the elements of choreography, the elements of design, stage lighting and set design. Additionally, students spend time viewing and listening to professional examples of all disciplines to develop an understanding and appreciation for the arts.

The fine and performing arts curriculum not only meets the California State Board of Education content standards but is used at Hillcrest to reinforce other aspects of our curriculum in science, math, social studies, language arts, and leadership.

The last Fine and Performing Arts block will combine the entire Middle School with all four of the Fine and Performing Arts teachers working together to prepare for the Spring Production.
